Research Into the types of music magazines

Research Into the types of music magazines

Pop Magazine:
Pop Magazines usually consist of Bright Colours, A variety of shape fonts, various graphic images and pop artists as the centre image of the front cover. Pop magazines are usually more for the younger generations, then again cluttered with lots of information into fonts with colours that attract these young audiences into reading this certain magazine. Pop magazines usually have stereotypical 'feminine colours' as they're the main type of audience that buy pop magazines. Included in these magazines there will also be articles about makeup and hair tips would be more for the female audience, as well as celebrity gossip which also could encourage the audience to buy this magazine. The name of these pop magazines is usually very large and would probably stand out the most out of the whole cover, with its bright bold colours. The main image then would always have a current popular artist or a pop band with some sort of 'exclusive' interview about them to also attract the audience into finding out more about popular faced artists. The language of the magazine would be informal so the readers feel like they're learning out of this magazine and forming a sort of relationship within the magazine, this would encourage them to buy more magazines from this certain company.

In creating my pop music magazine I aim to produce work similar to the brand Billboard, due to Billboard having a more sophisticated way of presenting their pop magazines, making everything clear by being laid out so formal. These magazines are always more aimed at older audiences by the way they present their magazine and the language inside.

Music Magazine Questionnaire

This is my music magazine questionnaire, i used this to figure out what people liked and disliked about music magazines to make mine the best it could be, i let a variety of people answer these ages between 16 to 50 to get a variety of answers, i found that was a lot of genres of music people liked and disliked which made it hard to think of what magazine to do, i focused on pop but my magazine is also a all genres magazine to reach peoples likes and dislikes, i also found that many people liked bright magazines especially younger people which made me draw my ideas to bright magazines with bold fonts. The difference in gender didn't effect my magazine as stereotypes with younger people who i asked have entwined and both boys and girls like the same colours ect,so this wasn't a issue, older people were more traditional with what colours for what gender but my magazine more focuses on teenagers so i mostly aimed on finding out their views. The lay out of the magazine was also very similar in what people thought it was mostly a classy look with some other elements of adding crazy writing ect to give it more of its own vibe and not keeping it too basic

Student magazine demo page plan

This was my simple plan for my student magazine, i wanted to make sure i had all the key features a magazine would need to get recognised, here i have the title (the masthead) The text,The standing out image and features to make the magazine eye catching 'monthly features' this was my plan.

Third front cover anaylsis

THIRD FRONT COVER

-Masthead: The masthead is bright due to the contrast of the black and white rest of the magazine, this makes the masthead stand out and the yellow makes it look more interesting. Although it is relatively small and the main pictures lays over the masthead, but this probably isn't a problem because the readers are familiar to the title.

-There are three layers and three different colours for the whole magazine, as well as a variation of different fonts making the magazine repetitive but interesting because the things needing to stand out do with the mix of colours.

-Rule of Thirds: This magazine doesn't conform to the rule of thirds, it could be separate into  halves.

-Lure: In bold is 'WIN!' this can also make the audience buy the magazine if they're interested in winning anything inside.

-Three articles are sign posted on the front, but only one page reference of it is used. The Nirvana article is the most prominent because its the most important due to the article being a Anniversary special of the Band, This being important and it gives a good idea to any new customers what this magazine is like.

-The Colours of the magazine on the cover are black, white and yellow, this is a popular scheme to have the grey scale with the huge burst of colour being yellow making it stand out and it's what us as a audience  read first.

Second Front cover anaylsis

SECOND FRONT COVER

-Katy Perry is looking directly to the Camera, this makes a connection with the reader, enticing them to buy this particular magazine. This also is known as Direct Mode Of Address.

-Lure 'BI-CURIOUS BABE' due to unknown name making it enticing and the magazine readable.

-The Pull Quote from inside the image intriguing the audience to buy and read the article it relates to.

-Katy Perry isn’t very covered up in this image, this could attract people to the magazine to buy the issue who are attracted to this.

-Picked by people attracted to the image.

First front cover anaylsis

Front Cover Anaylsis

-Masthead:
The Masthead ‘Billboard’ has been written in a bold and simple font and is in the colour black, this is linking to the black and grey colour scheme of the whole cover, in some of the gaps of the letters are coloured blue and yellow this being used in every Billboard magazine. Although this time the whole mast head isn’t visible due to it being covered by the main image, it shows how this is a easily recognised magazine by the person buying it.

-Colour Scheme:
The use of the black, grey and white makes the front cover look more professional, this is ironic as the main model image ‘Lady GAGA’ has a unique style therefore by using the dull colour scheme is in contrast. However, her light purple hair has been used around the magazine to link directly to the main image.

-Target Audience: The target audience for this magazine
Is mainly directed at probably music fans as it includes
Stories that the audience are probably interested in, one magazine includes ‘How she writes pop hits’

Main Image:
The main image is of the music icon ‘lady gaga’ Who is known for her different styles of music, here she is wearing black clothing looking like she is trying to match the magazine, then she has a pop of colour which is her hair which is very eye catching. Then her hand is wearing some eye catching unusual jewellery which with the hair brings out her uniqueness. Her lack of clothing this could relate to the sell line which says ‘why doesn’t she wear pants’ However; this could be simply to draw in the reader.

The sell line:
The sell line 'Lady Gaga' is in large bold writing with the colour being black matching with the  colour scheme and its the same as the 'billboard' illustrating its as important as the magazine title. It's also next to the models light purple hair, making her stand out even more, therefore the audience know its lady gaga.

Third double page spread anaylsis

THIRD DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD

-The Main headline: This is found on the left of this double page spread, this also where the text is for this article. The font of this is representing what the words are saying as the word 'Fiercely' is in bold, white. Where as creative is in a none creative font. Both of these words still stand out in comparison to the rest of the article, they are nicely clear on the graduated dark pink background.

-The Caption: In the top right hand corner this is for the article, and says 'Woman of the year' This tells the reader that the article is going to be about a woman who is most likely famous and very important. The bold white writing stands out against the dark grey background so it is easy spotted by the reader and informs straight away on what it is about.

-Writing columns: There are two writing columns in the article, they're located on the left hand side this is because a lot of writing can feel very intimidating making people lazy to reading it, whereas here people can read it without thinking its too much. It could be the first thing people see and get put off so it's important it makes good for people to pick it up.

-The Colour Scheme: The colour of the article is very mixed and different, the gradient of dark pink to a slight grey on the left then makes the dark grey look good with it on the right, also the use of the white onto these dark colours makes it easy to see the articles and stands out the title well onto this background.

-The Main Image: is placed on the right hand page and takes up the whole page. This is because when the reader turns the page The Model is what they see first, so they know the article is automatically about her, it also reduces the writing. In the image the model Beyonce has very statement makeup on as well as her dramatic costume, her dark eyes relate to the 'Fiercely' title on the double page, as well as her metal looking costume in the head shot.
